Trio set to sign for Southend United

SOUTHEND United are closing in on a trio of loan signings.

Tamika Mkandawire, Ben Reeves and Matthew Lund all look set to commit their short term futures to the League Two club.

And the Echo understands the transfers can now be completed after an embargo imposed by the Football League was lifted.

“We want to get the maximum number of games from the loans and with that in mind we hope Tamika will sign on Saturday,” confirmed a club spokesman.

“We can only keep him for a further 31 days because we had him for two months earlier on in the season.

“However, if he signs Saturday then he will be available for seven of the nine league games we have left and also the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

“Ben Reeves’ loan we will try and extend tomorrow and then Matthew Lund’s early next week to strengthen the squad for the matches we have left.”

Mkandawire impressed during a two month loan spell earlier on in the season and helped Blues find their best form of the current campaign.

The 29-year-old midfielder made 12 appearances and scored against Brentford in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy before heading back to Millwall in January.

He returned to train with Blues last week and boss Paul Sturrock had hoped to complete a deal in time for him to face Port Vale.

But a deal could not be completed due to an embargo.

Southend now hope to complete a deal for Mkandawire though, and also for Reeves who impressed during his initial month long spell from Southampton which expired a fortnight ago.

The 21-year-old midfielder scored twice in eight games and memorably netted the goal against Leyton Orient which sent Blues through to next month’s final of the JPT against Crewe Alexandra at Wembley.

Lund has also done well in the centre of the park, making seven appearances

Anything that helps to keep Mohsni out of the team is fine by me.

I think it's too late.
If Ron had put his and in his pocket earlier and also paid the outstanding debts to the tax office then maybe Tuesdays debacle wouldn't have happened.
Reeves is a quality player and I'm afraid to say far too good for SUFC.
It just amazes me that Ron Martin can't see further than his nose. We need to try and make the play offs yet he waits to get these players in.
How many other clubs get winding up orders every month? We will never get a new ground. It's been talked about since the mid 80s when Roy mcdonagh was centre forward. Let alone a 3 sided ground as Ron will undoubted say he cant afford the main stand!
I've been a season ticket holder for many years now and yes it's great to go to wembley etc etc.
but I think we really need to look at the future of our club. We haven't moved forward when the likes of Blackpool and Swansea who we were beating not so long ago have.
We cannot get any outside investment and Ron Martin refuses to budge as all his money is tied into a new stadium and let's not forget the more lucrative retail park that's bolted onto it.
I fear that our club will or is slowly being suffocated by Ron Martin.
I feel sorry for the players, for Paul sturrock who at times especially at the beginning of hs reign performed minor miracles. But mostly for the fans who never see progression and investment.
I love southend. I will support them for ever more but I think Ron Martin is killing us.
