Updated: Southend United sign Cauley Woodrow from Fulham on loan
SOUTHEND United have completed the loan signing of Fulham striker Cauley Woodrow, subject to approval from the Football League.
As was first revealed in Echosport, the 18-year-old trained with the Shrimpers at their Boots & Laces base yesterday.
And boss Phil Brown has now moved quicker than originally expected to bring the youngster to the club on an initial month-long deal.
“We’re pleased to have Cauley here and I’m delighted it’s all been done in time for him to play against Morecambe,” said Brown, who had originally planned for the loan switch to be sealed next week.
“He’s someone I’ve seen play and is maybe what we’re missing in terms of striking options.
“He applied himself really well during training yesterday and I’m sure he’ll do well during his time with Southend United.
“He’s with us for a month to begin with before we assess the situation.”
Woodrow joined Fulham for £440,000 from Luton Town in March 2011 and scored 20 goals in 19 games for their under-18 side last season.
Woodrow, who watched Blues’ 2-1 defeat at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, has also been referred to as the next Teddy Sheringham and is contracted to Fulham until 2016.
But he is now keen to develop his game by experiencing senior football for the first time.
“I’m delighted to be here and I’m really looking forward to getting some first-team football under my belt with Southend,” said Woodrow.
“I really enjoyed my first day with the players; they’ve all been great and I’m now just looking ahead to this weekend’s game against Morecambe.
“I’m sure it will be a good test but I’m looking to do well here and hopefully get some good results and some goals.”
Woodrow will wear the number 33 shirt while he is with the Shrimpers.
