Andrew Frye takes medal honours at Rochford Hundred Golf Club
3:00pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in Sport
THE men’s section at Rochford Hundred Golf Club held their September Saturday medal where the weather played its part as scoring conditions proved difficult.
Three handicapper Andrew Frye secured the honours in the top division with his total of 79-3=76.
Frye recovered from a poor run of holes early in his front nine as he posted eight pars in total along with birdies on two par fives.
Frye’s strong finish of one under through the final three holes just denied Matt Fearn (78-1=77) in second.
The day’s scoring highlights went to the second division as both the winner and runner up shot the best gross scores of the day.
Ken Sims, playing off 11, deservedly landed the spoils courtesy of a superb outward nine as he shot gross one over par as he ran up a string of pars with some solid play. Five further pars on his inward stretch saw him post 77-11=66 as he earned himself a handicap cut of two strokes to nine.
The runner up, Lindsay Cunningham (76-8=68) could probably count himself a little unfortunate as he shot the day’s best score only to lose out in his category by a single shot.
Cunningham managed nine pars in total along with a couple of birdies as he threatened the leader.
However two closing bogeys saw the lead switch round, but Cunningham could console himself with a one shot handicap cut to seven.
The third tier went to Barry Finch with a fine 80-13=67 with Mick Hobbs (87-19=68) as both saw two shots shaved off their respective handicaps.
Finch played some excellent golf on his homeward nine with the real highlight being three threes in a row as he went birdie, birdie, par around Rochford’s amen corner.
In the midweek Scott Spencer 12 handicapper Mike Davill notched 10 pars with two birdies as his Stableford total of 42 points won him both the competition and a new playing handicap of 10.
Second placed Paul Bullock also earned himself a one shot cut as he posted 40 points playing off 14.
Tom Wells with 39 came third as he carried on in his rich vein of form.
The Ladies section held their breakthrough medal which saw another in form player in Gill Warnock secure first place with a nett 73.
Jo Rumsey and Terri Stanley came second and third respectively with net 75s as both ladies earned one shot handicap reductions.
