Mectech drivers Bradley Smith and Lewis Plato qualify to race at Daytona in 2014
BILLERICAY racing drivers Bradley Smith and Lewis Plato will be heading to America next year to race at Daytona.
Smith has qualified as the winner of the Sunoco Daytona Challenge to drive in the 2014 Rolex 24 in a sports car prototype.
And his Mectech team-mate Plato also qualified for a drive in the Sunoco Grand-Am 200 Challenge, where he will be piloting a saloon car in the race.
The drivers got their seats for the Florida races after Smith won the Radical SR3 Championship and Plato accrued sufficient points in the Radicap Clubmans Cup to prevent anyone beating him to the Daytona drive.
Delighted Mectech boss Mike Smith said: “The boys have been superb all year but they have got the right cars.
“We put in a huge amount of testing and it has reaped rewards so the pair of them getting the chance to race at Daytona is a real team effort.”
Smith said the drivers were hoping to test at Daytona before their races next year but are currently concentrating on the final round of their respective Radical championships at the end of this month.
