Basildon make it three wins in a row
4:00pm Tuesday 15th October 2013 in Sport
BASILDON recorded a third successive victory, beating Holt 37-22 to move up to fifth in the London Two North East table.
After starting the season with two defeats in a row, Basildon have now rediscovered their best form.
But it was Holt who opened the scoring on Saturday with a well struck penalty.
Basildon soon hit back with a try from skipper James White and the scrum half soon went over again to make it 10-3 with half an hour on the clock.
Man of the match, flanker Charlie Karby, then got Basildon's third try and just before half time, prop Gary Burke, who impressed on his debut, was on hand to score.
Two conversions from White made it 24-3 at half-time and, at the start of the second period, Basildon’s leading try scorer Greg Smith scored his fifth try of the season.
Smith charged forward 40 metres and evaded two tackles before touching down in his final game before travelling around New Zealand.
His latest effort made it 29-3 in favour of Basildon but the home-side then seemed to relax and that enabled the superb Holt pack to take control.
Two pushover tries soon followed before White added a penalty for Basildon.
In reply, Holt’s backs combined well to score another try which cut Basildon’s lead to 34-22 but another White penalty then settled the home-side’s nerves and clinched their latest victory.
