Southend United manager Phil Brown tells players to keep feet on the ground
SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown has urged his players to keep their feet on the ground despite securing an impressive 2-0 victory against Fleetwood Town at Roots Hall on Friday night.
The Shrimpers have now triumphed in three successive league games.
But, after achieving the same feat at the start of the season, Southend then went six games without a win.
And Brown is demanding a different reaction from his troops this time around.
“I'm absolutely delighted with the squad at the moment and the win against Fleetwood but we can't afford a repeat of what happened last time,” said Brown.
“At the start of the season we also had three league wins and three clean sheets before conceding a late, late losing goal at Chesterfield and going on a bad run.
“We're on the crest of a wave at the moment but we need to keep our feet on the ground because we've already seen this season how quickly results can change.” However, Blues were certainly fine form on Friday as a Barry Corr brace helped them see off high-flying Fleetwood.
And Brown felt his side's work ethic made them worthy winners. “Fleetwood played some good football but so did we and I think we came out on top of the battle and deserved the win,” said Brown.
“Our work ethic, especially in midfield if you want to highlight the three in there, was fantastic.
“It was a good feisty encounter and the boys seem to have picked up the 4-3-3 formation we're using which is really pleasing.”
The victory also handed the Shrimpers their first home win since mid-August and ended a run of four games without a win at Roots Hall.
And that also delighted Brown.
“I want to massively improve the home form this year and we threw the players a curve ball before the game by warming up at the other end of the pitch,” said the Shrimpers chief.
“It was something slightly different they had to react to and we want to build on this now, starting with Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday night who we certainly have a score to settle with after losing to them in the JPT.”
