Updated: Southend United's appeal against Mark Phillips' red card rejected
SOUTHEND United have failed in an appeal against the red card Mark Phillips was shown during Tuesday night’s defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge.
The experienced centre-back was dismissed for a challenge on Daggers striker Rhys Murphy.
And he will now miss Blues’ next three matches, much to the disappointment of manager Phil Brown.
“It wasn’t a reckless challenge, Mark didn’t use excessive force and it wasn’t dangerous to the player he tackled,” said Brown.
“He made a meal of it at the time but scored four minutes later so he can’t have been too badly hurt.
“The referee also had a yellow card in his hand for about 25 seconds before the assistant referee got involved so we decided to appeal against it but unfortunately it wasn’t successful.”
