MEMBERS at Langdon Hills Golf Club are celebrating after winning their first ever silverware.

The women’s team defeated Stock Brook Manor 4-1 in the final of the Essex Ladies’ County Golf Association’s Harris Bowl.

It is the first county final victory golfers from the Lower Dunton Road club have enjoyed since the club was opened in 1991.

“We are really excited about it and are already looking forward to defending the trophy next year,” said club spokesman Brian Harrington.

“I do not think we have got out of the league section before and had never got to the quarter-finals before, so we thought we’d lose that.

“When we got to the final it was like a football team going to Wembley. We thought we’d just enjoy the day but we ended up winning quite comfortably.”

The five-strong team was 3-0 up when rain forced the final at Upminster Golf Club to be ended early with the remaining two rounds halved.

June Morgan, Josie Williams, Phyllis England, Lyn Campbell and Cathy McIlroy made up the winning team, although other players had featured earlier in the competition. The non-playing captain was Jo Ward.

The Harris Bowl features around 50 teams who play in a league with the top eight progressing to the knock-out stages.
