Phil Brown, Southend United manager: “Daniel Bentley made a mistake for their first goal but recovered well and was definitely one of the best players on the pitch.
“But other than that there weren’t many positives for us out there.
“We were undone by a good team who knew how to play the conditions better than us.
“None of my starting 11 had ever played here before and we had a young team out there.
“We were missing two experienced defenders in John White and Mark Phillips and we had to replace them with youngsters who found it hard.”
Newport County manager, Justin Edinburgh: "We were excellent and I thought that was our best performance of the season.
“I felt we were in control for the whole game and I never really felt like we weren’t going to win the game.
“We can look at individual performances and single them out but it wasn’t about that today.
“For me it was a fantastic team effort and everyone really played a part.
“If we had not been up against a goalkeeper who I thought was outstanding then we would’ve won this by five or six and I’m pleased because Southend are a good side.
“They had picked up some very good results away from home so we’ve done well to beat them like this.
“The only downer on the day is that we’ve picked up another two injuries with Tony James and Andrew Hughes both having to go off.
“But hopefully their injuries won’t be too bad and it won’t take the gloss off what has been an excellent afternoon for us.”
