Southend United striker Freddy Eastwood out injured for up to three weeks
SOUTHEND United’s top goalscorer Freddy Eastwood is expected to be out of action for up to three weeks with the knee injury which forced him to miss last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Newport County.
Eastwood, who turned 30 earlier this week, suffered the injury in training the day before the clash at Rodney Parade.
And boss Phil Brown now fears the striker will miss the Shrimpers’ next few matches.
“It’s bad news where Freddy is concerned and it’s looking like he will be out of action for two or three weeks now,” said Brown.
“It’s a blow because he’s got five goals and averages one goal in two games which is what strikers want so we’re disappointed he’s now going to be out for a little while.”
However, there is better news for Blues concerning both defender Adam Thompson and midfielder Marc Laird who have now returned to training.
And Thompson could be considered for tonight’s game against Mansfield.
“Adam trained yesterday after getting over the calf problem he had and if he came through that with no reaction then he could well be in the squad tonight,” said Brown.
“Marc has been training for a few days now and he could be in the squad too but it’s probably too early for him to be involved.
“He’s had an ankle problem which has delayed his comeback but we have a behind closed doors friendly on Tuesday which we’re looking for him to play some part in and it will be good to have him back.”
Blues have skipper John White available again after he completed a one match ban but centre back Mark Phillips is still suspended following his recent red card against Dagenham & Redbridge.
