Southend United manager Phil Brown sees mileage in getting Southend United away day travel just right
SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown has stressed the importance of preparing properly for his side’s forthcoming games on the road.
Blues make the long journey to Morecambe in the first round of the FA Cup on Saturday before travelling to Exeter City the following weekend.
Those two matches will see the Shrimpers travel more than 1,000 miles.
And Brown will be urging club chiefs to ensure the players can remain as fresh as possible.
“I will be bringing it to the attention of the board of directors that we need to get the travel side of things right for these away games we have coming up,” said Brown.
“We have Morecambe and Exeter in the next couple of games and when you think that we also go to Torquay and Accrington Stanley next month I think we’re travelling something like 3,000 miles in the next couple of months.
“We may have to look at the train or other forms of transport because we need to be in the best shape possible for the game if we are to do anything this season.”
Blues’ first long trip will see them make the 564-mile round trip to Morecambe in the first round of the FA Cup this weekend.
But Brown was not too disappointed when that draw was made.
“I think I was one of very few who didn’t mind getting Morecambe as my first thought was it meant I got to see my wife and daughter again,” said Brown.
“It’s back in the north of the country nearer to where I’m from, so it’s a good draw from a personal point of view and hopefully it can be a good one for footballing reasons too.
“It would be nice to have a cup run but Morecambe are going well at the moment so it will be a very hard game for us.”
