Basildon bag fourth win in five games by beating Stowmarket
1:35pm Tuesday 5th November 2013 in Sport
BASILDON saw off Stowmarket 31-15 to secure a fourth win in five games.
After a scrappy start by both sides mainly due to a very strong cross wind, Basildon took the lead in the 12th minute when number eight Jim Harman touched down out wide.
Stowmarket responded a minute later with their own unconverted try in the London Two North East match.
With the elements slightly in their favour, the visitors maintained continued pressure and it finally told on the half hour when they went over for a try.
Basildon dug deep and edged their way forward with strong forward tight play which finished with back row Conran Clarke going over under the posts with the conversion added by skipper Chippy White.
Within a minute Basildon were awarded a penalty which again was converted by White to ensure the teams were locked level at 15-15 at half-time.
The second period started with Basildon applying strong pressure and they took a deserved lead within five minutes when Gary Burke stormed over to touch down.
With the visitors now struggling to get out of their own half for long periods they eventually conceded two penalties which were both kicked by White.
Basildon were now in complete control and a quickly-taken penalty caught the visitors napping and resulted in Johnathan Bonnett scoring Basildon’s fourth try which also earned them a winning bonus point.
