SOUTHEND United midfielder Marc Laird is ready to step up his role in the Shrimpers’ push for promotion.

The Scotsman believes he is now back to his best in the centre of the park after recovering from the knee and ankle injuries which kept him sidelined for three months.

And, after ending a 13 month goal drought in Saturday’s 3-1 win at Chesterfield, Laird is also hoping to hit the back of the net on a more regular basis.

“After being out injured for so long I think it was always going to take a little bit of time to get my fitness and form back but I feel like I’m there now,” said Laird.

“I felt really good at Chesterfield and getting the goal was a great feeling.

“I was thinking before the game that it was about time I scored again, especially when I was looking round the changing room and you see that Ben Coker and Luke Prosser have both scored two goals.

“It’s important we all chip in and of course I want to start scoring a few more now.”

Laird also helped to create Kevan Hurst’s late goal against Chesterfield at the weekend to set up a tie with his former Millwall side in the third round.

And Laird felt he flourished playing in a more advanced role in midfield.

“I had been playing in a more holding position but I think pushing forward allowed me to use my energy and play much better,” said the 27-year-old.

“It was a very good win against a good side and we did well to come back after conceding an early goal.

“It showed the character of the team but the spirit we have here at the moment is up there with the best I’ve ever known in my career.

“It’s brilliant and we want to try and keep this good run going for as long as we can now.”
