Jack Jones: Westcliff can overcome slump
WESTCLIFF slipped off the top of the London One North table with a 21-17 defeat at Letchworth Garden City.
The reverse was Westcliff’s fourth in their last six games.
But fly-half Jack Jones, who scored all of his side’s points at the weekend, is certain the side will soon rediscover their best form.
“I truly believe we are more than capable of winning the league,” said Jones, who scored one try and four penalties. “We just need to stay positive and execute how we know we can play.
“There is still a good feeling with all the lads and we are excited for the challenges the rest of the season will bring.”
Westcliff started the campaign in fine form and won eight of their first nine games following their relegation from National Three London & SE.
But since then they have started to stutter and Jones was frustrated by their latest setback at Letchworth Garden City.
“I think we played better than last week but there are still a few key aspects we need to sort out,” said Jones.
“It was highly frustrating to lose because we know we can play better and we need to keep our heads in the right place for the entirety.”
Second-placed Westcliff will now be looking to bounce back this weekend when they take on a Colchester side who sit third in the standings, also on 49 points.
And Jones believes improved concentration could signal a return to winning ways.
“It’s not the fact that things are going wrong it’s just that we tend to switch off before the job is done and that’s not good enough whether your winning by 50 or losing,” said Jones.
“We know what to work on and we are all in it together now to get things right — as of this week.”
