SOUTHEND United's hopes of promotion have been dealt a huge blow after influential defender Rob Kiernan revealed he had been recalled by Wigan Athletic.

The 22-year-old suffered just three defeats in 15 matches after arriving at Roots Hall in early October.

But, writing on his Twitter page, Kiernan confirmed he had gone back to the Latics at the request of their new manager Uwe Rosler who the centre-back worked with while at Brentford.

“Been recalled by Wigan from my loan,” confirmed Kiernan who had been due to stay with the Shrimpers for another fortnight.

“Would like to thank everyone at the club. The gaffer, staff and lads have been brilliant and I genuinely hope you get promoted this season.”

Kiernan's departure has yet to be confirmed by the club but it could leave Blues short of defenders as Luke Prosser missed the 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon with concussion.

Adam Thompson's loan spell from Watford is also due to expire shortly, leaving Mark Phillips as the club's only other available defender.
