ROB Kiernan has refused to rule out returning to Southend United on loan this season.

The Shrimpers’ hopes of promotion suffered a huge blow at the weekend when the impressive centre-back was recalled by his parent club Wigan Athletic.

But the 22-year-old, who suffered just three defeats in 15 games for Blues, would love to head back to Roots Hall if possible.

“I’m at the age where I want to be playing so if that’s not happening at Wigan I’ll ask to go out on loan again and would certainly welcome coming back to Southend,” said Kiernan.

“I don’t think I’m any good to anyone if I’m sat on the bench and I said to Phil Brown when I left that if there was any way I could come back then I would be interested.

“It’s out of my hands though really and it’s all up to Wigan what happens from now on.”

Kiernan produced a number of consistent displays at the heart of the back four while with the Shrimpers.

And he was saddened to be called back earlier than expected by the Latics.

“I was quite upset when I was suddenly told I had to leave Southend and go back up north,” said Kiernan.

“Wigan have a few injuries so they wanted me to go back but there’s still a lot of competition there so I’m not sure what will happen.

“The new manager there Uwe Rosler I know from being at Brentford and he said he wanted to see me.

“Obviously I hope to play but whatever happens it’s been great for me at Southend and up there with the best loan spells I’ve ever had in my career.”

Kiernan had been due to stay with Southend up until the clash at Plymouth Argyle in mid January.

But he now hopes Blues can continue to play well and secure promotion this season.

“I really hope the lads can go on and get promotion,” said Kiernan.

“The quality is there in the squad and the management team for it to happen and I hope it does.

“I’m sure they will want to bring two or three new players in during January but whether or not that will be possible because of the embargo I don’t know.”

Kiernan’s departure also leaves the Shrimpers short of defenders.

Adam Thompson’s loan spell from Watford is also due to expire in January while Luke Prosser has also been struggling with concussion.

Mark Phillips remains Blues’ other available centre-back and he will now be looking to re-establish himself in the starting line-up.
