BARRY Corr wants to extend the New Year’s celebrations by banishing his goalscoring blues when Southend United host Portsmouth at Roots Hall this afternoon.

Corr’s only goal in his last 13 games came against the south coast side at Fratton Park in November.

And the Irishman, who will do battle with Cauley Woodrow for a place in the starting line-up, is now desperate to rediscover his form and confidence in front of goal.

“I think when you’re a striker it’s all about goals and when you’re not getting them you’re confidence does drop,” said Corr.

“People expect you to score and if you don’t then you’re only likely to get a six out of 10 in the Echo.

“If you score then you can get seven, eight or nine but I need to just get one goal to get myself going again and I hope that comes today.

“It’s a big game and hopefully a change of year can bring a change of luck and I can score again to help us get a good result.

"I might even get a higher mark then!"

Corr dropped to the bench for Blues’ 1-1 draw at Accrington Stanley on Sunday as the on loan Woodrow lined up as the lone striker.

However, Corr had no complaints about the decision and is ready to play whatever part manager Phil Brown has in store for him against Portsmouth.

“Of course I want to play, like we all do, but the manager will pick the team he thinks is best equipped to win the game and I’ll do whatever he wants me to,” said Corr.

“Cauley deserved his chance after doing well off the bench but I thought I made an impact when I came on at Accrington so we will have to wait and see what the manager decides to do now.

“Sometimes it’s a bit easier coming on because that’s often when we switch to playing with two up front but this is a really big game today and we’re all desperate to win it.”

Blues head in to the game sitting sixth in the League Two table and remain just three points behind leaders Chesterfield.

Portsmouth, who won the FA Cup in 2008, are down in 17th and have triumphed in just one of their last 11 outings.
