Southend 2, Portsmouth 1, LIVE
This live event has finished
Thanks for following the action live here this afternoon. The full report and more reaction will be in tomorrow's Echo.
Richie Barker, Portsmouth manager: "When your luck is out your luck is out and we saw that here because we should’ve been out of sight by half time.
“Going forward it’s the best we’ve played since I’ve been at the club in terms of creating chances.
“Their goalkeeper has had to make four or five very good saves whereas our goalkeeper hasn’t but Southend took the chances that their came their way and that was the difference in the end.
“We’re struggling for numbers at the moment though and that’s something which we must address during the January transfer window.
“We had five or six teenagers in our squad at that tells you where we are the moment.”
Phil Brown, Southend United manager: "I made the decision to sacrifice Anthony quite early on in the game but it certainly wasn’t a reflection on his performance it was just down to tactics.
“Portsmouth had four centre-backs out there along with Ryan Bird on the wing who is a big lad as well so I thought that we needed more height in our team, along with a change of formation and that’s why I brought Barry on.
“I could’ve taken any of the lads off to be honest but I went for Anthony in the end.
“He’s been outstanding for us this season though and I’m sure he will be again in the matches we have coming up.”
