Southend United want to sign Adam Thompson on permanent basis from Watford

Echo: Adam Thompson - wanted by Southend United on a permanent basis Adam Thompson - wanted by Southend United on a permanent basis

BLUES boss Phil Brown is keen to sign Adam Thompson on a permanent basis.

The centre-back completed his initial six month long loan spell from Watford by coming back in to the starting line-up for Saturday’s 4-1 win against Millwall.

But Brown does not want it to be Thompson’s last game for the game.

“We’ve spoken to Watford and also Adam and we want to him to stay with us,” said Brown.

“We’re actually looking at getting something done that would keep him here beyond the end of the season because his contract is up at Watford then and we want to try and get it sorted.

“I put him back in to the team against Millwall and asked him to prove a point which he certainly did because he was very impressive back there.”

Thompson has made 11 appearances for the Shrimpers and has also captained Northern Ireland’s under 21 team this term.

Southend Andy says...

Just seen this on the sky web site, be great if true

Southend United have won the battle to sign Watford defender Adam Thompson.

Sky Sports understands that a host of clubs were trying to sign Thompson, and Shrimpers boss Phil Brown admitted two rivals had looked to scupper their attempts.

But now Thompson has agreed a deal with the League Two club and will sign an 18-month deal at Roots Hall.

The Northern Ireland Under-21 international captain has just completed a six-month loan deal with Southend, and they worked hard to keep him at the club.
