SOUTHEND United have missed out on a £144,000 cash windfall after their fourth round FA Cup clash with Hull City was not picked for a live television broadcast.

The tie — which will see Phil Brown taking on his former team at Roots Hall later this month — was among 16 matches vying for the five available slots on ITV and BT Sport.

But TV chiefs announced the quintet which will be screened live yesterday which means 10 other clubs will get £144,000 TV money each plus £90,000 for the five winners.

Southend have already picked up £112,500 in prize money for reaching the fourth round and will also have been further boosted by gate receipts.

The Hull game, which will be played on the weekend of January 25, is likely to attract a big crowd.

Blues would have appreciated the extra TV revenue as the club is looking to get out of a transfer embargo during January in order to strengthen their squad during the transfer window.

The FA Cup tie starts a busy week for Phil Brown’s team as they visit Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday, January 28, before hosting Newport County on Friday, January 31.

The five games being screened are: Arsenal v Coventry (Friday, January 24, 7.45pm, BT Sport), Liverpool v AFC Bournemouth or Burton Albion (Saturday, January 25, 12.45pm, ITV) , Everton v Stevenage (Saturday, January 25, 5.30pm, ITV) , Sheffield United v Norwich or Fulham (Sunday, January 26, 1pm) , Chelsea v Stoke (Sunday, January 26, 3.30pm)
