TWO junior tennis players from Langdon Hills are set to receive a boost to their blossoming careers after being selected for an LTA scheme.

Abigail Michelow and Peter Eriksson have been included in the 2014 intake for the LTA Aegon FutureStars programme.

It is the second time that 11-year-old Abigail has been supported by the scheme after being selected last year.

But 10-year-old Peter is a newcomer to the programme which identifies and supports British players who show tennis potential.

“There’s obviously a long way to go for these players,” said the LTA’s head of men’s tennis Leon Smith.

“It’s a long journey for any player hoping to make an impact on the game but we hope that with the right support, these players are given the best possible chance of reaching their full potential.

“We are committed to supporting and identifying our most talented players, and the Aegon FutureStars programme is central to this process for young players who are starting out in the game.”

Abigail and Peter were among 424 junior players from around Britain who were selected to be 2014 FutureStars based on their performances last year.

Abigail is a member at Clearview Health and Racquets Club in Brentwood and currently has a rating of 7.2.

She is currently ranked 53rd nationally at 12 and under level and 518th at 14 and under.

Within Essex she is ranked fourth in the younger age group and 20th at 14 and under.

Peter is currently competing at green level in mini tennis and has not played an LTA-sanctioned event.

Players picked for the FutureStars programme receive varying amounts of support including kit, funding and featuring in exhibition tennis matches at events around the UK.

The scheme caters for players aged between eight and 18.
