BARRY Corr admitted to being close to tears after scoring in Southend United’s convincing 3-0 win against promotion rivals Chesterfield at Roots Hall on Saturday.

The Irishman bagged Blues’ final goal with his sixth strike of the season as Phil Brown’s side moved up to fourth in the League Two table.

And Corr was particularly pleased to score with his two young children – Jamie and Summer – watching on from the stands.

“My kids were here watching and they don’t get to many games it was great to score and I was almost in tears on the pitch to be honest,” said the 28-year-old striker.

“They probably didn’t really know what was going on as they’re both still quite young but it was certainly a day I’ll remember.

“It was a really good performance in what was a really big game between two teams who are certainly capable of getting promotion this season.”

Kevan Hurst and Ryan Leonard had both previously hit the back of the net before Corr also fired home to extend the Shrimpers’ run of good recent form.

Blues have now been beaten just once in their last 15 games and Corr was thrilled to have again come out on top.

“Our work rate and togetherness was spot on again but we showed some quality as well when we had to,” said Corr.

“I think we maybe switched off a bit for the last 20 minutes or so and we had to rely on Daniel Bentley to make some really good saves.

“He showed why he’s such a huge prospect and he’s certainly destined for bigger and better things.”

Bentley and Blues will now also be bidding to impress against Premier League side Hull City in the fourth round of the FA Cup at Roots Hall on Saturday.

And preparations for the tie against the Tigers will begin today.

“We sometimes get Mondays off after a good result but I don’t think that was ever going to happen when we’re playing Hull at the weekend,” said Corr.

“We all grew up dreaming of being Premier League players and we’re all excited about coming up against a team from that level and testing ourselves up against them at the weekend.”
