Grays Athletic goalkeeper Lamar Johnson faces D-day to appeal over ban
GOALKEEPER Lamar Johnson has until the end of play today to appeal against his one-year ban from playing football.
The Grays keeper has been told by the FA he is suspended from all “football activity” until January 1, 2015, and was fined £550 after he admitted an offence during Athletic’s Ryman Premier match against Bury Town in September 2013.
The game’s governing body says the former Concord keeper breached FA Rule E3, which states he was in or around the tunnel area after the end of the fixture and exhibited violent conduct and/or threatening behaviour.
The Echo understands that Johnson overturned tables and smashed a glass after a Bury player said something to him at full time following a 4-3 win by Grays in a feisty encounter at the Rush Green Stadium in Romford, where Grays play home matches.
A source said players and staff attempted to restrain a furious Johnson but the police were eventually called to diffuse the situation.
The FA say he has until the end of today to appeal.
Johnson has been advised by Grays Athletic not to comment on the case until they have had a chance to discuss his options regarding an appeal.
But on Twitter, he wrote: “Cantona got 8 months for attacking a fan, Di Canio got 11 games for putting a ref on his ass, Suarez got 8 games for biting and I get a year.”
A Grays Athletic spokesman said: “Lamar Johnson has been suspended by the FA following their investigation into an incident following the home match with Bury Town.
“Lamar has been fined and suspended for 12 months for his part in the incident, a charge to which he pleaded guilty.
“No further comment can be made by the club until appeal opportunities have been exhausted.”
Johnson has played an important part for Grays in the Ryman Premier this season but this ban kept him out of Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Thamesmead Town and out of last night’s scheduled away game – at Bury Town.
