WILL Atkinson wants to help Southend United make history this weekend by beating a top flight side at Roots Hall in the FA Cup for the very first time.

The Shrimpers host the midfielder’s former Hull City team in the fourth round of the competition tomorrow.

And Atkinson is eager for Blues to finally cause an upset in front of a capacity crowd after five unsuccessful previous attempts.

“We’re obviously big underdogs for the game but the magic of the cup means anything is possible,” said the 25-year-old.

“We will need to have a good day and Hull will need to have an off day and we will need a bit of luck to go our way.

“But we’ve lost once in our last 15 games so we’re feeling confident and looking forward to testing ourselves against a Premier League team.”

Atkinson is also particularly excited about the game having risen through the ranks at the Tigers.

After initially signing for his home-town club as an eight-year-old, Atkinson went on to make eight first team appearances.

And there will be divided loyalties for his friends and family this weekend.

“My family will be in the Southend end and my mates will be in the Hull end,” said Atkinson.

“I’m from the area so and was with the club for quite a lot time but it was hard to get in the first team because the club were pushing up the leagues.

“In the end I knew I had to leave to further my career and I’m glad I did otherwise I wouldn’t be enjoying a season like this with Southend.”

Atkinson also tasted success with Bradford City last season as he helped them reach the League Cup final before winning promotion via the play-offs.

The memorable cup run included shock victories against both Arsenal and Aston Villa and the midfielder is therefore fully aware of what is needed to spring a surprise.

“We just need to work hard, keep at it and not give up.

“I’m sure the atmosphere will be great as well and we certainly have the spirit and quality in our line-up to be able to give Hull a good game.”
