Newport County manager Justin Edinburgh: "We are getting used to conditions like this but we definitely had to weather the storm in the first half with Lenny Pidgeley making some great saves but we came out of the second half and pushed Southend and created a lot more chances.
"I don't blame Robbie Willmot for the penalty, he buries them in training every week and it's just one of those things. I thought he was going to make amends near the end but the keeper made a great save.
"Overall it is a great point, we've had some tough encounters away from home and I'm happy with our performance here this evening.
"We have played a lot of games away from home this season already and we need to make sure we push on at home now.
"It is a good clean sheet and point away from home against a very strong Southend team who I'm sure will be in the thick of it come the end of the season."
Match report now online
Blues 0, Newport 0
Four minutes of injury time to be played
Seven minutes to go. Can either of the two sides make a late breakthrough
Newport's last change sees Mike Flynn come on for Ryan Burge
75 minutes gone and it's still 0-0
Conor Clifford comes on for Michael Timlin
Second Newport change: Christian Jolley on for Shaun Jeffers
I stand corrected. Phil Brown had a 0-0 draw with Bristol Rovers at the end of last season. There goes that story then!
Newport's first change. Max Porter, a former Blues youth team player, comes on for Adam Chapman.
Pretty sure Phil Brown has never taken charge of a 0-0 draw since coming to Blues
25 yard shot from Michael Timlin flies inches wide of the right post
Lee Barnard will need games before being back to his best. That hour will have done him good tonight.
Freddy Eastwood comes on for Lee Barnard
Blues don't really look like making a breakthrough at the moment.
Penalty has just been spotted down the A127, still hasn't landed!
Can anyone else recall a worse penalty than that at Roots Hall?
Blues stuttering a bit here. Newport seeing more of the ball.
Attendance: 5,993 with 165 from Newport
Worst penalty I've ever seen at Roots Hall
Robbie Willmot fires the penalty over and wide, shocking!
Mark Phillips brought down Ryan Burge
Penalty to Newport
Think Blues are now playing 4-3-3
Second half is now underway
Anthony Straker comes on for Barry Corr
Newport out early for the second half. Blues yet to appear.
The rain is now also coming down far heavier
John White was holding his shoulder towards the end of the first half, hope that doesn't mean he's having to go off.
Straker now being called in.
Dave Penney just came on to the pitch during the half-time break to speak with Anthony Straker.
Blues 0, Newport 0
Newport taking their time over every throw or goal kick. Annoying Blues fans and players.
One minute of added on time to be played.
Lee Barnard's deflected header from Ben Coker's left wing cross is well saved low down to his right by Lenny Pidgeley
35 minutes gone at Roots Hall and it's still 0-0
Newport angry Blues did not kick the ball out in build up to Barry Corr's chance as they had a player down injured.
Barry Corr through on the angle but his shot is tipped wide of the right post by the keeper.
Great right wing cross from Kevan Hurst is met by Will Atkinson but his header is pushed on to the right post by goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley.
Rene Howe in attack for Newport. Interested Blues in the summer when Barry Corr looked set to leave.
Still haven't had anything to write about!
Pitch will also mean not much football can be played tonight. Going to be a real battle
Luke Prosser watching the game from just in front of the press box. Isn't wearing his lucky head band!
10 minutes in and it's still 0-0. It's been a quiet start to the game.
Newport: Pidgeley, Pipe, Chapman, Minshull, Willmott, Sandell, Jeffers, Burge, Naylor, Worley, Howe
Subs: Stephens, Hughes, Porter, Flynn, Jackson, Anthony & Jolley
Two changes to the Blues team tonight. John White in for Luke Prosser which means Adam Thompson moves to centre-back with White at right back. Lee Barnard also replaces Anthony Straker as Blues line up in a 4-4-2 formation.
Blues: Bentley, White, Phillips, Thompson, Coker, Hurst, Leonard, Timlin, Straker, Corr, Barnard
Subs: Laird, Eastwood, Straker, Clifford, Payne, Gomis & T Smith
