SOUTHEND’S director of rugby Chris Green feels even more confident about his side’s chances this season, despite them suffering four straight defeats.

The Seasiders are due to host fifth placed Cambridge in National Two South this weekend.

And Green believes the team are capable of getting back to winning ways.

“It might sound strange but I’m actually more confident about the team than I was before the four defeats we’ve had and I fancy our chances against Cambridge,” said Green.

“The defeats came against the top four teams in the table but we lost three of them by six points or less away from home and should probably have won to be honest.

“The odd break or score just didn’t go our way but we can still take heart from the games.

“But the important thing is to make sure we learn from why we ended up losing the matches and then stop that happening again so we start to pick up more points again.”

Cambridge were among the early pace setters in the league but have also now suffered four straight defeats to slip down the standings.

Their latest reverse came at home to third from bottom London Irish Wild Geese at the start of the month.

And Green feels that could fire the visitors up this weekend.

“I have no idea what has brought on their slight loss of form but they will be determined to get back on track,” said Green.

“For me they remain one of the strongest sides in the league so we’re in for another real test but being at home I fancy our chances of getting the win.”

However, the game remains in serious doubt due to the state of the pitch at Warners Bridge.

The team have been unable to train there for the last three weeks because of the wet weather and Green is desperate to return to normality.

“It’s been frustrating but we’ve been lucky to be able to train at Seevic College and at Southend High School for Boys,” said Green.

“The forecast isn’t the best ahead of tomorrow’s game either but hopefully we can get the match on because it has the makings of a good one and we want to get the win too.”

Southend are also hoping to complete the signing of another prop forward in time for him to figure tomorrow.
