Southend United manager Phil Brown: “Our performance was there for everyone to see and I thought we did just about enough to have won it.
“We’ve hit the crossbar and had two or three cleared off the line but things just didn’t seem to break for us in front of goal which was disappointing.
“However if we keep on playing like this and have the right kind of attitude to go along with that then I’m sure things will start to turn for us.
“Credit to Hartlepool though because they came smelling blood after our recent results and they certainly went for it too.
“But we also need to start showing a bit more belief if we are to get back to winning ways.”
