SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown was left ruing his side's bad luck as their winless streak was extended to nine games with a 1-1 draw against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

The Shrimpers looked set to get back to winning ways when Barry Corr headed them in front at Roots Hall.

But the Chairboys equalised when a shot from substitute Paris Cowan-Hall struck the crossbar before hitting the back of goalkeeper Daniel Bentley and rolling in to the back of the net.

And Brown felt the manner of the visitors' goal summed up Southend's current plight.

“The goal Wycombe scored was just remarkable and for me it really does just sum up how things seem to be going for us at the moment,” said Brown.

“We had more shots than Wycombe, more corners, more chances, had more of the ball and did enough to collect the three points.

“But we were undone by a very lucky goal which Daniel Bentley was despondent about after the game.

“I don't think there was anything else he could've done to be honest but it's obviously disappointing not to have won the game.”

However, it was not just the result which frustrated Brown as he was also critical of Wycombe's time wasting tactics as they regularly slowed up the game to stop Southend building up any momentum.

And Brown was quick to vent his fury at the match officials.

“It was embarrassing how long Wycombe were taking over every throw in and goal-kick,” fumed the Blues boss.

“It was happening before the half hour mark but when I mentioned it to the fourth official he said the only way to speed up the game was for us to score a goal.

“We want to get bums on seats here though, not drive them away and the crazy thing was Wycombe could even have won it at the end.”

The draw kept the Shrimpers seventh in the League Two table and Brown is keen for his side to remain upbeat, despite their loss of form.

“We've got ourselves in to the play-off positions by having a positive mindset and that has to stay the same,” said Brown.

“We need to show more belief in the final third still but there's still plenty to be positive about and plenty to play for as well.

“I also still feel that one win will get us firing again too.”
