SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown is hoping to be able to sign defender Jakub Sokolik from Liverpool.

The centre-back played in a behind closed doors friendly at Colchester United last week before spending two days training with the Shrimpers.

And Brown has been impressed by the 20-year-old, who is from the Czech Republic.

“I need to talk to a couple of coaches but hopefully those discussions will be positive,” said Brown.

“Jakub has done well and I’ve certainly been impressed by him.”

Southend currently have just two fit available centre backs in their squad – Mark Phillips and the on loan John Egan.
