KEVAN Hurst insisted he felt sorry for the fans who watched Southend United’s disappointing 2-1 defeat at Morecambe on Saturday.

The Shrimpers’ winless streak was extended to 10 matches following a below par performance at the Globe Arena.

And Hurst labelled Blues as ‘garbage’ in the second half.

“It just wasn’t good enough again out there and being honest I felt sorry for the fans who have come all this way to watch that garbage in the second half,” said the winger.

“We did OK in the first half but we seemed to start panicking when Morecambe scored and we need to have a good look at ourselves in the mirror after this.

“We seemed to look edgy and we all need to be better than how we played here, including myself because I’m certainly not hiding away from anything.

“We need to be big enough and man up to put things right.”

Blues looked like getting back on track when Ryan Leonard headed home a left wing cross from Hurst after just nine minutes.

But the Shrimps, who had not won in 10 games, hit back to come out on top.

And Southend boss Phil Brown had no complaints about the result.

“I thought we deserved something from the first half but definitely not the second and it’s another very disappointing afternoon,” said Brown.

“I think we’ve been beaten by Morecambe’s nous and experience and that’s what got them over the line.

“I think we need to learn from this and realise that you can’t always be playing pretty football.

“Morecambe played the conditions better than us but up until we conceded what was a farcical and simply unacceptable goal I thought we were by far the better team.”

Despite the defeat, Blues remain seventh in the League Two table and face a tough looking test at second placed Scunthorpe United tomorrow night.
