SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown finds it crazy his side are still in the League Two play-offs positions after Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Bury at Roots Hall made it 12 games without a win.

The Shrimpers, who had Barry Corr sent off eight minutes from time, have not won since mid January and have now taken seven points from the last 33 on offer.

But they still somehow find themselves sitting seventh in the table, much to the surprise of Brown.

“I find it crazy that a team who have gone 11 league games without winning are still in the play-offs but we’ll certainly take it,” said Brown.

“The division is mental this season and, if I’m honest, I just think we’re lacking that bit of quality in the final third you need to win matches.

“It could well be likely that we look to bring someone in on loan in that area to help improve us because with 14 clean sheets we should probably be top of the league if we could do well at the other end.”

Freddy Eastwood wasted the best chance of an incredibly dull encounter when he fired over from 12 yards.

But his replacement Corr fared even worse after he was sent off in the 82ndminute following an off the ball clash with Bury defender Frederic Veseli.

And Brown will be studying the incident again on DVD before deciding whether or not to appeal.

“I spoke to the linesman and he said he thought Barry had head-butted their player but we’ll review the footage and see what it shows,” said Brown.

“You can’t send someone off because you thought they did something but I can’t really say too much until I’ve seen it again.

“It’s frustrating though because I think we saw today that Barry is the only striker we have who can play that number nine role.

“Freddy, Lee Barnard and Jack Payne have all tried but it suits Barry best.”

Eastwood was handed his first start since September against the Shakers.

But Brown felt the experienced front-runner lacked the service he needed to shine.

“If I was Freddy I would’ve been disappointed with the balls coming in to me,” said the Blues boss.

“He wasted a couple of chances which was maybe down to a lack of sharpness but I think the Freddy of old would’ve put them away.”
