WESTCLIFF roared back to winning ways to exact revenge on Chingford with a 57-6 win in London One North on Saturday.

Second-placed Westcliff were beaten by title rivals Eton Manor in their previous encounter.

But they recovered well to see off Chingford, who handed Westcliff their first defeat of the season earlier in the campaign.

And the manner of the victory pleased Westcliff’s first team manager Rick Compton.

“It was a satisfying win against Chingford, who are a strong and well established side at this level, as they reminded us back in November,” said Compton.

“But more importantly, the reaction to last week’s disappointment was very positive and we achieved what we set out to take from the game in terms of both the points and the performance.

“We have four games left now and although we are no longer favourites to win the league, we intend to keep the pressure up on leaders Eton Manor.

“We also want to maintain the gap between ourselves and the strong finishing and recently strengthened Luton, starting on Saturday at home to seemingly doomed Diss.”

Westcliff started on the front foot against Chingford and had already missed a not-too-difficult penalty when Ross Merrick crossed for the first of his three tries.

Jack Jones missed the conversion but soon added a penalty as Westcliff continued to apply pressure.

But Chingford were far from beaten and replied with a penalty of their own from stand-off Dan Boughtwood.

A converted try from Westcliff’s Buster Reynolds on the half hour mark established a 15-3 lead but a positive response from Chingford brought reward with a further Boughtwood penalty right on half time to leave the score 15-6 at the break.

In the second half, Westcliff benefited from having the wind at their backs.

And they gained further advantage 10 minutes into the half when the Chingford inside centre reacted unwisely to receiving a yellow card and immediately received another one to end his contribution for the afternoon.

By that time Jones had already converted his own try and predictably more were to follow.

On 52 minutes Andy Roskams crossed and was quickly followed by Merrick, who then added his third of the day shortly afterwards.

In what was a one-sided final quarter, further tries from Chris Marsh and Elliott Harvey completed the rout, with Jones adding the extras to each of the five second half scores.
