The fantastic under-16 girls basketball team got the ball rolling with their fourth straight Essex Cup victory when they beat Great Baddow 63-51.

There were just four points seperating the two side at half-time, with Greensward leading 27-23, but the girls turned on the style in the second half to record a comfortable victory.

The team included Summer Osborne, Chelsea Locke, captain Megan Jones, Abigail Miloslawer, Kate Vaughan, Ria Toovey and Rhian Simpson.

The success of the under-16 team was then emulated by the under-15 team who have proved as dominant as their older counterparts over the years.

They have won the Essex Cup each year they have competed and reached the National Finals last year.

So it was no surprise that the team proved too strong for Great Baddow, running out winners by a score line 76-23 The basketball success was followed by some dominating displays on the netball court at both district and county level.

The under-16 girls netball team – many of whom are also members of the basketball side – won the Essex Cup final after beating Barking Abbey 24-18 in the final.

First the team of Megan Jones, Abigail Miloslawer, Lauren Reason, Amber Evans, Georgia Logan, Abby Cronin, Emily Gaskin, Summer Osborne and Zoe Willis had to see of Brentwood 25-23 in a nerve-shredding semi-final.

The final was an equally close affair – for three quarters.

Going into the final quarter the score was locked at 14-14 but Greensward were simply too good for their rivals in the closing stages as they went on to wn 24-18.

The same squad have also been crowned district champions at the netball rally.

They beat Sweyne, Deanes, Appleton and Cornelius in the group stage, FitzWimarc in the semi-final and then King John in the final.

Not to be undone by the success of the senior team, Greensward’s youngest netball squad competed in the junior district netball rally at Cornelius Vermuyden with both the A and B teams winning their respective competitions and all their games in the process.

The boys have had success too, with their senior rugby team being crowned Essex Schools Rugby Festival champions after a tournament at Thurrock Rugby Club.

The team played some great rugby, helped by a very dominant pack of forwards who did not lose a scrum throughout the tournament.

Finally, the Year 7 boys football team qualified for the semi-final of the Essex Cup – the first team from the school to do so.

The team battled bravely against the Royal Docks School, from Newham, in the semi-final, before losing 3-2 after extra time.

After taking the lead through a lob from Jack Nolde, Royal Docks fought back to take a 2-1 lead for half time.

Nolde scored again from the penalty spot to take the game into extra time but Royal Docks got a heart-breaking late winner in the second period of extra time.
