Will Atkinson - hoping to beat Burton Albion again in the play-offs

SOUTHEND United midfielder Will Atkinson is hoping history can repeat itself in this season’s League Two play-offs.

Last term, Atkinson helped Bradford City to promotion, via the end play-offs, after the Bantams beat Burton in the semi-finals.

And the 25-year-old now wants the same to happen with the Shrimpers.

“It’s funny how it’s worked out and that I’m playing against Burton again but hopefully we can have the same outcome and get promotion,” said Atkinson.

“We actually lost the first leg at home before winning at their place so the matches are the other way round this time.

“But once you’ve experienced playing at Wembley and winning there as well you want to go and do it again and that’s exactly what I want to happen with Southend now.”

Atkinson has played a major part in helping Blues made the play-offs, making 51 appearances in the centre of the park.

His energy levels have continually caught the eye.

But that came after he was initially disappointed to have left Bradford at the end of last season.

“After the season we had it was sad to leave Bradford but at the same time I knew Southend was a fantastic club and I was happy to sign for them,” said Atkinson.

“I knew all about Phil Brown as well and it was a good move for me and it’s been a good season too.

“However, now we want to finish it off by getting some silverware and promotion.”

For that to happen, Blues must first work their way past Burton in a two legged semi-final.

The first clash will take place at the Pirelli Stadium on Sunday before the teams meet again at Roots Hall the following Saturday.

But Atkinson is expecting two tough tests against the Brewers.

“Burton are a good team and the two games we’ve had against them have been very close so I’m sure these ones will be as well,” said the midfielder.

“It’s a nervy time but we’re playing well and we’re determined to give a good account of ourselves.
