HULLBRIDGE Sports have won their first ever senior trophy after triumphing in the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy.

Sports defied the odds to beat Haringey Borough 1-0 in the showpiece occasion, with Michael Edgar scoring the decisive goal at Leslie Field, the home of Burnham Ramblers FC, on Tuesday.

Dan Braney and Mark Bliss’ side followed up their best ever league points total by producing one of their best performances of the season to win the cup, without conceding a goal in the process.

“It is a special moment for the club,” said Braney, after the game. “We worked really hard and fully deserved the win on the balance of the game.

“We know what a good side Haringey are, but our game plan worked perfectly and we managed to stifle them.

“I couldn’t ask anymore of the players and I can’t wipe the smile off my face.”

Sports started the match on the front foot and forced the Haringey keeper into a save after only three minutes.

After that both sides exchanged possession in midfield but it was Borough who should have gone ahead, when a shot was fired over from 12 yards.

On 30 minutes, Sports struck what proved to be the winner. A ball into the box was poorly punched clear by the Borough keeper and the ball ended up at Michael Edgar’s feet.

He took aim and fired the ball into the unguarded net. It was no more than they deserved on balance of play so far.

Borough finished the half strongly and Sports keeper Bobby Mason had to make a smart save down to his right to turn an effort round the post just before halftime.

The second half saw few chances in the early stages but Liam Nash should have doubled Sports’ lead with 15 minutes to go when he was blocked as he tried to get his shot away.

A minute later Rob Lacey looked set the make the game safe after the Haringey keeper rushed out recklessly but his lob was just too short and was tipped over.

Borough pressed late on and Mason was forced into two smart saves before Nash once again missed a glorious opportunity, shooting straight at the keeper when one-on-one.
