A CHARITY match in memory of a hugely popular member of the grassroots football scene in Southend takes place tonight.

The Southend & Borough District Football Combination League has organised a game between Cupids and a League Representative XI at the Len Forge Centre, Eastwoodbury Lane, in memory of Tina Smith.

Tina was a former league secretary and Essex FA representative as well as a former manager and chairman of Cupids FC who she led to much success over the years.

The match kicks off at 7.30pm tonight with all proceeds going towards the Macmillan Cancer Charity who helped Tina and her family during her long battle with the disease.

League secretary Sheryl MacRae said: “Tina’s health problems came and went over the years but she never slowed up on her work load, carrying out all her many duties, with her usual efficiency, to the point where some people were not even aware of her problems and the battle she was facing.

“Taking on the post of league secretary was no mean feat. The Borough Combination Committee was an all-male institution, and having a female on board, raised a few eyebrows, and questions, about women being involved in football.

“Tina, being the type of lady that she was, slowly won them over with her efficient administration, straight talking, football knowledge and ability to bring humour into situations.

“She contributed 12 years to the Borough Combination which helped bring the league out of the dark ages and into a more modern era.”

Donations will be taken at the gate for tonight’s game with the league already raising £75 from Cupids’ match on Sunday.
