Extra year at Southend United for striker Lee Barnard

Lee Barnard - staying at Southend United for another year

First published in Sport by

LEE Barnard will stay at Southend United for another season.

The 29-year-old striker scored just once in 13 appearances during a six month loan spell from Southampton at the end of last season.

But the Echo now also understands that a year long contract was agreed for the former Mayflower School pupil at the same time.

Barnard bagged 37 goals in 85 games during a successful first spell with the Shrimpers which ended in January 2010 when he joined Southampton.

He also impressed while with the Saints before being struck by a succession of injuries.

Barnard had not played for eight months before coming back to Blues.

And the forward will now be hoping that with a full pre-season behind him he will be able to return to his best and start to hit the back on a more regular basis.

However, while Barnard will be staying at Roots Hall, centre-back Mark Phillips has confirmed on Twitter that he will be leaving.

Phillips made 114 appearances for Blues across four seasons and was ended the previous campaign on loan at Aldershot Town.

Surprised at that, must have taken a huge pay cut.

I see that James Constable (Oxford) wants to move - go for it Phil!! He would be a good League 2 striker - better than Freddie & Lee

Totally agree Marcus, Constable is just the type of player to partner Corr upfront, not Barnard. He is physical and has scored a lot of goals for them, I'm surprised they are prepared to let him go, or perhaps it's not their choice? Mind you, saying that, with a pre-season Barnard might get back to form? Let's see!

I think Phillips has gone due to injuries more than anything else, plus with Thompson fit again he probably wanted more regular games which he will get at Aldershot if he stays there alongside Chris Barker.

Like all of us, hope Barnard's lack of goals this season was as a result of many injuries. That said, if we have signed him, we must rate him yet he didn't figure in the most important game of the season on Saturday??

Has the club announced anyone else going? nothing on the website - as usual.

Freddie?

Just hope we freshen things up and bring in players who are mobile and powerful, with the exception of Leonard, we have none.
