ST THOMAS More School’s athletics teams had a fantastic day at round one of the English Schools Track & Field Cup.

The school’s junior squad topped the standings at the event at Chelmsford’s Melbourne Park meaning they will progress into the next round, one step away from the finals at Bedford.

Meanwhile, the school’s junior boys team finished third.

There were fine performances across the board for the St Thomas More team with Year 7 pupil Herbert Zumbika, who won the 200m and shot putt, and Year 10 pupil Kacper Fraszczak, who won the shot-putt and was part of the relay team, particularly standing out.

As usual south Essex schools are dominating in the early rounds of the Track & Field Cup final with plenty of other schools progressing to the next round.

The Billericay School’s intermediate boys team won their qualifier while Southend High School for Girls had a double success in the junior and intermediate girls teams.

Mayflower School were runners-up in the junior boys and junior girls events while Greensward Academy also had a brace of second places in the intermediate boys and intermediate girls.
