GREAT Wakering saw off Canewdon in the Active Southend Evening Cricket League Knock Out Cup.

In a tight game played in very wet conditions, Great Wakering were put into bat and runs were hard to come by apart from Alex Gillespie who, after a slow start, opened up to hit 63 with five sixes and five fours.

Other batsmen supported him with modest contributions and Carl Sutton with 12 not out and Tom Baker with 11 not out saw the Wakering total to 126-6 off 20 overs.

Gary Holmes bowled well taking one for 11 off four overs.

But Canewdon lost early wickets before Dean Wilkinson avoided a hat-trick and went on to score 44 not out.

However, excellent bowling from Tom Baker (3-17) and Dan Deadman (1-13) meant Canewdon fell short at 109-6 at the end of their 20 overs.

Elsewhere, a high scoring game at Eastwood saw visitors Rayleigh Fairview win by six wickets.

Batting first, Eastwood posted an excellent score of 146-5 with Davidson scoring 42 and Coussins 20.

Hayward took 2-21 but Rayleigh Fairview were still able to come out on top thanks to McLean’s 66 not out and Adam Keating scoring 41 to help them reach 148-4 off 18.1 overs. Davidson took 2-14. In group B, rain prevented any play between Rankins and Civic Centre.

But, in the other game, Emersons had an easy victory over Rayleigh by 50 runs. Batting first Emersons scored 135-7 in 20 overs with Osbourne scoring 71 and Sanford 32.

In reply, Rayleigh were skittled out for 85 despite Carl Lees scoring 49. Osbourne took 3-0 and Deeming 3-17.
