Julian Bennett is contemplating his future at Southend United
JULIAN Bennett is contemplating his future at Southend United.
The injury plagued centre-back, who made just one appearance for the Shrimpers last season, has been offered a pay as you play deal to remain at Roots Hall.
But Echosport understands that the terms of the contract mean it may be financially impossible for him to stay with Blues.
“First and foremost the club remain committed to getting Julian back fit again after the cruciate ligament injury he suffered last season but talks have also opened about his future,” said a source close to the club.
“A pay as you play type contract is what has been offered to him but there’s a lot for him to consider, especially at this stage of his career, so it’s not a decision he’s going to rush in to making.”
The 29-year-old defender joined Southend last summer after impressing while on trial.
However, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury on his debut in the Capital One Cup against Yeovil Town last August and has yet to regain full fitness.
Bennett had originally been hoping around February time to feature during the final few of the games.
But he broke down again in training to end any hopes of helping the Shrimpers in their push for promotion.
The Nottingham based Bennett is still continuing with his rehabilitation as he strives to regain full fitness.
Bennett has previously played for Walsall, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Sheffield Wednesday in his career, making a total of 215 appearances in 10 years.
