YOUNG football stars showed off their promise at the divisional finals of the Southend & District Junior League.

Young teams from Wickford, Leigh, Billericay and Great Wakering won finals in different age groups ranging from under-13 to under-16 at the finals day, held at Roots Hall on Saturday.

The day kicked-off with the under-13 final and both teams gave it their all to claim the win. Wickford were put under pressure early on and a brace from Jack Lanning put Great Wakering Colts Blue in the driving seat.

However a stunning 25-yard strike from Rob Lodge, sandwiched either side of goals from Jack Mayles and Sam Cook gave Wickford the win, with Matt Rush adding gloss to the final scoreline of 4-2.

The man of the match award was given to Wickford skipper Ryan Dunn.

“It’s a big highlight to play here for these boys and everybody associated with clubs,” said league secretary, Tom Clarke. “We have to say a big thank-you again to Southend United. By hosting the finals here each year, they do an enormous service to football in the community.”
