GAVIN Tomlin could be heading back to Southend United.

The 31-year-old striker spent last season with Port Vale after leaving the Shrimpers at the end of the 2012/13 campaign.

But Blues boss Phil Brown has revealed Tomlin could now be returning to Roots Hall.

“We’re interested in bringing Gavin back to the football club and we’re interested in bringing him back here as well,” said the Shrimpers chief.

“I think he maybe left here too hastily when he was here before and he’s kept in touch with quite a few of the lads since he went away.

“I’m not sure he’s settled in too well going to Port Vale and he’s someone who I would certainly like us to sign.”

Tomlin scored 16 goals in 42 games with Blues before joining Port Vale at the start of last season on a free transfer.

However, he started just 17 of their league games last season and scored a total of six goals in 28 appearances.

Vale are believed to be keen to let him leave.

And Brown believes his side’s style of play makes them an attractive proposition for Tomlin.

“The way we play suits Gavin and he knows that,” said Brown.

“He saw how we passed the ball around last season and he’s obviously been here before so he knows what the club’s all about.

“Last time he was here he formed a great partnership with Britt Assombalonga and they scored 32 goals between them.

“I’m sure he may well have other options and more clubs in for him but I hope he chooses Southend.

“He can play centrally or out wide in a three man attack and I think he would do well if he came here.”
