SCOTT Hann hopes Max Whitlock can push for a number of gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next month.

Whitlock’s place in England’s gymnastics squad was officially confirmed yesterday.

And Hann, who coaches Whitlock at the South Essex Gymnastics Club in Basildon, wants it to be another successful outing for the double Olympic bronze medallist.

“Max’s targets are to do as well as he can and hopefully push for the all round gold, as well as the pommel horse, the floor and also the team event too,” said Hann.

“It’s testament to all the hard work that Max does that he keeps on getting selected for these top events and this is another one we’re both looking forward to.”

Whitlock, 21, won two silver medals and one bronze at the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi and has since gone on to secure great success.

He has wracked up three European Championships gold medals, two silvers and a bronze and also won a silver medal on the pommel horse at the 2013 World Championships.

Whitlock also won bronze on the pommel at London 2012, finishing just behind his high-profile team-mate Louis Smith.

Since the Olympics, Smith has not competed at a major championship.

But he will be in Glasgow and will go head to head against Whitlock on the pommel, something Hann cannot wait to see.

“It will be really good for Max to go up against Louis again,” said Hann.

“It’s a chance for him to show if he’s number one. But it’s a also a chance for Louis to get his name back out there again so it’s going to be very interesting indeed.”

Whitlock’s South Essex Gymnastics Club team-mate Reiss Beckford, who competed at the last Commonwealth Games, has been selected as first reserve this time around.

And Hann was frustrated not to see him picked.

“It was disappointing for Reiss but he’s next in line if any of the guys get injured,” said Hann.

“He’s got the bit between his teeth and he has other events to target, including the World Championships later this year.”
