SOUTHEND United will be heading back to Spain for pre-season training.

The Shrimpers enjoyed trips to Madrid ahead of their last two campaigns.

And Blues boss Phil Brown has now confirmed his squad will be going to the south of Spain for six days to get in shape for the forthcoming season.

“The trip to Madrid was excellent last year and I’m delighted that we’re able to get back out to Spain again this time too,” said Brown.

“We’re doing things slightly differently this year and we won’t actually be playing a game against anyone while we’re out there.

“It’s around 32 degrees there right now and the conditions will be very testing, which is exactly what you want at this time.”

The Shrimpers, who made the League Two play-offs last season, will arrive in Spain on Sunday, July 6, before heading home the following Friday.

And Brown is certain the trip will again help the spirit in the squad.

“Last year the team spirit we had and the togetherness of the team was fantastic and I think these kind of trips help with that,” he said.

“We have one new signing in Myles Weston already and hopefully we can have a couple more before we head out to Spain.

“It helps them to settle in and get to know their new team-mates.

“It brings everyone closer together because we’re with each other 24/7.

“It’s excellent that we’re able to have this opportunity and I’m sure it will be of great benefit.”

The Shrimpers start their pre-season training tomorrow and Brown expects to be running the rule over a few trialists.

“I’ve spoken to one or two but things can change quite quickly so it’s not worth naming any of them at this stage,” said the former Hull City boss.

“There will definitely be a few and we could well take a couple of them out to Spain to have a closer look at.”
