Great success at Thorpe Bay tennis day

Echo: A great time was had by all A great time was had by all

THE Great British Tennis Weekend was a big hit at Thorpe Bay Lawn Tennis Club.

More than 150 players attended the two day GBTW event, with ages ranging from four to 75.

The Thorpe Bay Gardens club was one of a host of clubs and parks in the town taking part in the LTA initiative aimed at getting people playing tennis.

“Many of those attending had never played tennis before but had been inspired to give it a go by seeing Andy Murray’s successes at Wimbledon,” said club spokesman Paul Marks.

“Others were rusty rackets and were looking for an opportunity to get some time on court and hit a few balls.”

Half of those attending the event were mini and junior-level youngsters who left with big smiles after learning new skills.

Visitors got the chance to play some games and receive coaching, with the highlight on both days being a series of exhibition matches between the club’s coaches and junior champions.

The Great British Tennis Weekend is being held over four weekends throughout the country and aims to capitalise on the public interest traditionally surrounding Wimbledon fort-night.
