MATT Southgate has it all to do in the second round of the The Open tomorrow after his opening round fell apart.

The Thorpe Hall professional made a solid start at Hoylake today but ended the round tied 152nd with a plus eight score.

Things had started promisingly for the 25-year-old Southend golfer with a birdie and five pars.

But a double bogey on the seventh put him a stroke under par, although he parred the next two holes to complete the out nine still well placed.

A birdied tenth got the former Thomas More School pupil back on a par total of 40 and he kept on track with a par on the following hole. Southgate then bogeyed the 12th and scored a par three on the 13th.

But his round really started falling apart on the 14th, which he bogeyed. Matters got worse as a double bogey on the 15th was followed by another bogey on the 16th.

There was no respite on the 17th where another double bogey did further damage to the round.

Southgate prevented further damage by hitting a par five on the 18th to leave his in score on 44 strokes compared to the par 37.

The Essex player did not speak to the press following his disappointing round and his family said he was returning straight to his accomodation.

Southgate will start his second round at 6.25am this morning as he bids to make the cut.

He was among the first trio out on the course, alongside Scotland’s Jamie McLeary, who is tied 70th on one over, and Japan’s Hiroshi Iwata, who is tied 18th on two under.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy is leading after the first round with a six under par total of 66.
