SOUTHEND'S Matthew Southgate improved on his opening round at The Open today but will still miss the cut on his debut at the event.
The Thorpe Hall professional, 25, had a horrible opening round on Thursday, finishing eight-over par.
Southgate did not have long to dwell on the round as he was back out on the first hole at 6.25am Friday morning.
And things did not look to be going too much better for him on the front nine at the Royal Liverpool course at Hoylake.
Despite a birdie at the fifth hole for a second day running, he bogeyed the fourth and ninth holes and double bogeyed the seventh to leave himself three-over par for the front nine.
But Southgate showed character, sinking birdie putts on the 10th and 14th holes, though he did also rack up three more bogeys to finish with a round of 76, four over par.
He has ended his debut Open Championships on 12-over par.
The projected cut is two-over par.
