AMIR Williamson finished a creditable sixth in the Commonwealth Games hammer final tonight and is now determined to sample more major championships.

The 27-year-old from Linford, near Stanford le Hope, had a best of 69.38 metres which he threw in the first round.

And he is now targeting more major events, including the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of being at an event like this and I want to be back for some more,” said Williamson.

“I don’t just want it to be a one off and I will be sitting down with my coach at the end of the year to discuss where we go from here.

“Myself personally I fancy the Olympics and feel I do have qualifying for them within my ability.”

Williamson currently combines his hammer throwing with working as a firefighter.

But he feels he does not necessarily need to train more to achieve his goal of more international appearances.

“Most of the other guys here are full-time but I enjoy my work and wouldn’t change it for anything,” said Williamson.

“Throwing is part of my life but so is work and so is being at home. “Hammer throwing isn’t my whole life and I’m fortunate to be able to do other things.

“The way things are going and with the work I’m doing with my coach and team I do feel there’s a good possibility of getting to the Olympics.

“Who knows what will happen but I would imagine it would take 74 or 75 metres to get there and I can definitely do that.”

Williamson was unable to go beyond 70 metres at a jam packed Hampden Park.

But he still relished competing in front of vociferous crowd of around 50,000.

“It was great out there, very special and I loved the experience,” said Williamson.

“My voice is dead but I’ll always remember this.

“I’m slightly disappointed I couldn’t push on and improve on my first round throw but these happen in competition.

“Now I very much want to build on this and throw even further to make this the first of a few more major championships for me.”
