ISAAC Layne is close to completing a switch from Billericay Town to Southend United.

The speedy striker has impressed Shrimpers boss Phil Brown while lining up for the Ryman Premier League side during pre-season.

And Brown is now keen to bring the youngster to Roots Hall.

“We want to bring Isaac in to the club but there are still a few conversations to be had,” said Brown.

“I know it’s been put out in some places that he’s already signed, but that’s a bit premature.

“However, we are confident we will get it done.”

Billericay manager Craig Edwards confirmed Layne would be linking up with Blues, although he said it was to be with their development squad.

This has not been confirmed by the Shrimpers.

Layne, 19, has been scouted by a number of Football League clubs, and made several trial appearances for Charlton Athletic this month.

However he returned to Billericay, having not been taken on by the Championship side and played recently against Southend at New Lodge in a friendly – which the League Two side won 3-1.

He will be replaced at Billericay by Rowan Liburd – who had previously spent time on trial with Southend.
