JESSE Jones is facing a race against time to raise the funds needed to rebuild his bike ahead of the next round of the Triumph Triple Challenge.

The Basildon rider suffered a heavy crash at Thruxton on Sunday which left him nursing cuts and bruises and his bike wrecked.

While Jones is OK, he only has a fortnight to rebuild his 600cc bike before the sixth round at Cadwell Park and has launched an appeal for donations.

“We’ve already got about £500 but we’re doing a Champagne sport on lemonade money,” joked Jones.

“The bike needs new forks, a new wheel, I’ve bent the frame and snapped the subframe.

“I also ripped a new set of leathers so it’s going to cost about £3,000 altogether.”

It was a disappointing end to a race weekend which had started promisingly for the Basildon teenager.

He qualified fourth, 0.972 seconds behind pole man Sam Cox, and finished the 12-lap race in fifth, 10.945 seconds behind race winner Cox, to collect 11 points.

Jones was suffering with a tooth infection on Saturday but was feeling better on Sunday and made some changes to the bike which made his pace much quicker.

Starting from seventh on the grid, he moved up to third and was battling with the top two riders.

All three were breaking lap records before Jones made a mistake in the chicane on the last lap.

He tried to make up for lost time on the leaders and then went into turn two too fast and lost the bike under braking at more than 100mph.

“I was a little bit too impatient and it was all my fault,” added Jones. “We were all pushing so hard below the lap record that it was surprising one of us didn’t crash before.

“I was a bit too eager and should have been more patient but there’s nothing to really learn from it, I just went into the bend too hot.”
